Have you been approved for IVF? Usually you have to be unsuccessful in getting pregnant for at least a year or two, before being recommended for IVF. That said. You’re not too young for the procedure itself. Since you’re 24, you have a higher chance then someone at age 35. Yes you’ll have to take hormonal injections daily, regardless of the fact that you’re healthy. They’ll overstimulate your ovaries to produce more follicles (eggs). You’ll go in every few days for an ultrasound to see the progress of the follicles. When they reach a certain number and size they’ll remove them. They’ll probably take out ~20 eggs or more, and then fertilize them with your husbands sperm in the lab. Depending how many eggs become fertilized, they’ll implant one or two in you, and may freeze the rest for later. It's quite expensive, 15,000 per cycle. The success rate is around 20% generally, but may be as high as 30-40% for your age.

IVF Treatment – Procedure, Pregnancy Success Rates, Embryo … Useful information on IVF treatment, covering the procedure used for embryo development, pregnancy success rates and related ethical issues involved.

You won't go straight to IVF if you have an ethical doctor. For people at your age, they ask that you try to get pregnant on your own for a year before you even seek assistance. Once you do seek assistance, most doctors start with the lease invasive procedures and move on to the more invasive procedures if the lease invasive procedures don't work. The least invasive procedure is IUI with no meds. Then there's IUI with meds. Then there are injectibles… There is a whole range of treatments that they would try before they would jump to IVF. And yes, you do have to take lots and lots of drugs because they’re trying to not just make you ovulate but make your body give up as many eggs as possible in one cycle. It’s incredibly invasive, requires constant monitoring, and isn't always successful. If you've been trying for 6 months to a year and have had no success, talk with your OB. They’ll refer you to a specialist, and they’ll figure out what is going on before putting together a plan to help you on the path to fertility. Best of luck!

You’re not too young and if you have been trying to conceive for a year (no more or no less) then you can seek fertility treatments. I’m not sure if a reproductive endocrinologist (RE) would do IVF as your treatment will depend on how low your husbands count and quality. Improving the count with other methods, or trying an IUI may be tried first. The success rate for your age group does depend on the clinic you choose, how you respond to the stimulation medications, and your egg and embryo quality. You can find clinics success rates in the USA at sart.org Because you’re young you have a great shot! A great clinic has about a 50% success rate for women under 35. There are what they call natural IVF cycles where they let you ovulate as you normally do and you dont take medications and there are mini IVF cycles where you take a low dose of meds but most clinics do a standard IVF cycle. With this, you’ll be put on medications to stimulate your ovaries to produce lots of follicles. How many you make depends on how you respond. The poster above me said to expect twenty or more eggs but that’s not always the case. Some women don’t respond well and get two or three eggs and some women respond too well and get 40. They’ll do lots of blood testing and lots of vaginal ultrasounds to monitor you. When you’re ripe they’ll retrieve your eggs. I would guess that because of your age you’ll make a good number of eggs but because of your husbands count they’ll do ICSI where they inject one sperm into each egg. Not all of those eggs will fertilize. I’m sure though that you’ll have some good ones to transfer and a few to freeze. You’ll have, most likely, two transferred on day three or five depending on the quality and then its the two weeks wait! The timeline of IVF treatment depends on the protocol that your RE puts you on. The entire cycle can take between four and eight weeks. If you’re put on BCPs, and I expect that you would be, it’ll be one the longer side. I don’t cycle with BCPs and my cycle last just under four weeks. Here is a great site that explains how the different protocols work Fertilethoughts.com is a great forum you may want to take a look at. There are lots of great supportive women there who know what it’s like to take a walk in our shoes. Much luck to you!
